RESUMEN

Introduction : Physicians in India are frequently the first point of contact for patients with chronic kidney disease. Hence, awareness of clinical practice guidelines for Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) among the Postgraduates/ residents of MD Medicine is of paramount importance. The aim of this study is to assess MD Medicine Postgraduates’ and Residents’ awareness and knowledge of clinical practice guidelines for Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD). Materials and methods : The present study is a cross-sectional observation study. A questionnaire of clinical vignettes on CKD with multiple choices was prepared. A one-time survey of MD Medicine postgraduates and residents from various medical colleges in three states of southern India has been collected. Results : A total of 228 Postgraduates or Residents of MD Medicine participated in the study. The awareness of clinical practice guidelines for CKD was low across all postgraduate years (PGYs) of MD Medicine. We measured the CKD awareness in postgraduates and residents of MD Medicine based on the Postgraduate year, Medical college and institute, type of institution (either Government funded or capitation fee), the presence of a nephrology fellowship in the institution, and the consultation given to the Nephrology patients in the Medicine OPD. Conclusions : The modest awareness of clinical practice guidelines for CKD across all PGYs has suggested that incorporation of these guidelines into the medicine postgraduate training curriculum is not robust at present. We also discussed the means to improve the understanding of nephrology by the postgraduates/residents of MD Medicine

RESUMEN

A simple, precise, rapid, selective, and economic reverse phase high performance liquid chromatographic (RP-HPLC) method has been developed for the simultaneous estimation of Lopinavir and Ritonavir in marketed formulations. Chromatographic separation was achieved isocratically for the combination was done with a C18 column [ ODS UG column. 250mm× 4.5 mm] utilizing mobile phase of composition Acetonitrile and Phosphate buffer (60:40v/v, pH 3) the flow rate was 1.5ml/min and the eluates was monitored at 220nm. Lopinavir and Ritonavir were eluted with retention times of 2.1min and 4.0min respectively. The method was found to be linear over a range of 20-100 μg/ml for Lopinavir and Ritonavir. The method was validated according to the guidelines of International Conference on Harmonisation (ICH) and was successfully employed in the estimation of commercial formulations.

RESUMEN

A gas leak occurred affecting the teaching staff as well as 65 students of a school in Andhra Pradesh, of whom 9 became seriously ill. The students were shifted to the nearest hospital. Many were treated on an out-patient basis, while 9 students were admitted for 2 days, and then discharged. Since the parents were still apprehensive about long-term sequelae arising from the exposure, the district collector directed the district medical and health officer to investigate and take necessary steps. The latter arranged a medical camp involving several medical officers under the guidance of a team of clinical toxicologists and community medical care specialists from a major teaching hospital of the area. Detailed examination and investigations were done, and all the cases were followed up. None went into long-term complications
